Arthur Gee
Ridge Farm
Longnor
Derbyshire
Arthur has farmed at Longnor all his life, with his father Harry, who has been at Ridge Farm for 80 years. On the 125 acres of pasture and meadowland Arthur and Harry have a herd of 40 White Park cattle. This traditional British rare breed are renown for their sweet taste, and marbled meat. They also have smaller herds of Dexters, Herefords and Lincoln Reds. All the stock is born and reared on the farm, and they are self sufficient in fodder for the animals, growing their own hay and sillage. The land is farmed in a traditional extensive way, to encourage the flora and fauna. The flower rich hay meadows are cut late in the season to protect the diversity of flora which thrives there. Part of the farm, in a small remote, stream-fed valley is home to nesting Lapwing and Black Grouse.
